NOVEMBER BIRTHSTONE
Those with November birthdays have two beautiful birthstones to choose from: topaz and citrine.
In shades of yellow, brown, honey, green, blue, red, pink and sometimes no color at all, Topaz has a broad range of appeal. It is most often found in amber gold, yellow or a blushing pink-orange, but a pale pink or a sherry red Topaz is highly exceptional. The most prized color of Topaz is called Imperial Topaz and features a magnificent orange with pink undertones.
Topaz can commonly be found in an attractive blue shade; a special irradiation treatment is used to alter colorless topaz to a bright blue. This treatment is widely accepted nowadays and it can be taken for granted that a great deal of the affordable blue topaz on the market has gone through this treatment.
Citrine, another November birthstone, is a form of pale yellow to dark amber quartz, with its yellow tones coming from iron. Most famous is Madeira Citrine, a golden-yellow variety.
Natural citrines are rare; most for sale are actually amethyst or smoky quartz that has been heat-treated to produce the yellow hue, turning the gem to citrine.
